SUMMER READING PROGRAM ACTIVITIES 2024
June 18, 2024 - Storywalk® and Pop Up at the Pool (11 a.m.) - Join us to walk around the loop and read through our Storywalk® book. We’ll end with some time cooling off in the Monterey pool, with admission paid by the library.
Meet by the Little Free Library at Highland Elementary School.
June 25, 2024 - Bright Star Theater Presents Aesop’s Fables (11 a.m.) - These fables from the legendary Greek storyteller, Aesop, have been delighting young and old alike for thousands of years, and they still have a message for us today! Stories like “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” “The Tortoise and The Hare,” and “The Lion and The Mouse” leave audiences with a message that is both timely, and timeless. This is a great program for all ages!
July 2, 2024 - The Lorax Movie (11 a.m.) - This classic Dr. Seuss tale shares a timeless call to protect and preserve our natural resources. The Lorax explores the interconnected world of nature and the possible damage if we don't act responsibly. Run time 1.5 hours.
July 9, 2024 - Sidewalk Chalk and Cupcakes (11 a.m.) - Decorate the library sidewalks with your best chalk art ideas. We can work together or come up with individual ideas. We’ll celebrate afterward with cupcakes!
July 16, 2024 - Didgeridoo Down Under (7 p.m.) - An exciting and interactive Australia-themed show that incorporates music, science, character building, environmentalism and more. Fun and learning for the whole family!
July 23, 2024 - Mud Painting (11 a.m.) - Wear some old clothes and join us for outdoor fun! We’ll work collaboratively to come up with artwork that can be displayed outside for friends to enjoy.
July 30, 2024 - Talewise Science Program (11 a.m.) - Sponsored by the Cowpasture River Preservation Association, Science Heroes get the audience excited about science and keep them engaged the entire time! This program is designed for elementary children to help connect science concepts to their everyday lives and practice thinking critically.
August 6, 2024 - Bird Identification Hike (11 a.m.) - Show your little ones how to spot and identify different bird species using their unique features and calls. This hands-on activity is perfect for families who love exploring the great outdoors.
August 9, 2024 - Spoonman and End of SRP Finale (11 a.m.) - An inspiring musician, comedian, and keynote Speaker, Jim will teach us how to play spoons and we’ll have fun celebrating accomplishing our summer reading goals!
2024 SUMMER READING CLUB PRIZES FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS
This year we will be tracking summer reading on Beanstack at highlandlibrary.beanstack.org. Register on Beanstack and join the Adventure Begins at Your Library Summer Reading Program, and log your minutes there. For every hour of reading you complete, you will be awarded a badge. When you have completed five hours of reading, you will be eligible to claim a prize. After that, you will be awarded a badge, BragTag, and prizes for every extra five hours you read, up to ten times in total. Kids from 1 through 17 years old are eligible. If you cannot read yet, then someone can read to you. Reading program runs June 14 - August 10, 2024.
Don't have a computer or phone for apps? Don’t worry, we will do the Beanstack logging for you, and you can track using a sticker log. Just ask us at the front desk!
At the end of the Summer Reading Program, we will have a drawing where you could win an Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet, LEGO Technic NASCAR Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, LEGO Friends Farm Animal Sanctuary, KEVA Contraptions 200 Plank Set, LEGO Duplo Classic Alphabet Town, Long Range Walkie Talkies, Craft Crush Bracelet Making Kit, or Toy Rocket Launcher. Remember, the more you participate in the summer reading program the more chances you will have to win one of the big prizes!
June 20, 2024 - Come-and-Go Teen/Tween Junk Journals (6 p.m.) - Come and enjoy, we'll provide the supplies, and you’ll walk away with a super fun way to express yourself!
June 27, 2024 - Monthly Teen/Tween D&D Game Night (6 p.m.) - New and experienced players are welcome to join the adventure at our monthly meeting! All snacks and supplies provided.
July 11, 2024 - Monthly Chess/Game Club (6 p.m.) - All ages and levels are welcome at this monthly event. Good snacks and great conversation are provided, as well as everything you need to play the games!
July 25, 2024 - Monthly Teen/Tween D&D Game Night (6 p.m.) - All are welcome to join the adventure at our monthly meeting! Snacks and supplies provided.
July 30, 2024 - Talewise Science Adventure for Teens/Tweens (2 p.m.) - Hand-on science projects to get your mind working this summer! We promise it will be explosively good fun, and hey, you might learn something too!
August 1, 2024 - Tween/Teen WONKA Movie Night (6 p.m.) - Join us for a world of pure imagination, and candy! We’ll provide all the snacks and fun, just grab a friend and find a seat!
August 8, 2024 - Monthly Chess/Game Club (6 p.m.) - All ages and levels are welcome at this monthly event.
Good snacks and great conversation are provided, as well as everything you need to play the games!

When you register for the summer reading program, be sure to pick up your registration packet at the library. We'll give you your first Brag Tag and a chain. Each time you complete a reading log and stop by to claim your prize, you may select another Brag Tag. Collect them all!
