Unattended Children at the Library
Highland County Public Library
The educational and cultural enrichment of children is central to Highland County Public Library’s mission. Furthermore, the Library encourages parents to be active participants in this process, whether it takes the form of attending library programs together, helping them check out materials appropriate to their reading level, or improving their online experience by screening web content for subjectivity, misinformation or inappropriate content.
The safety of children is of utmost concern to the Library. While children are not required to be under the supervision of a parent/ guardian while at the Library, it is strongly recommended that children under the age of eight be accompanied by a parent/ guardian at all times. The Library takes every precaution to provide children with a safe zone for learning and cultural enrichment, but does not assume responsibility for any child left unattended at the Library.
Although each of the computers with Internet access is outfitted with filtering software that blocks offensive or harmful material, the software is not fool-proof. The Library is not responsible for any content on the Internet that is deemed offensive or harmful to children. For this reason, parents are strongly encouraged to be present and active while their children use the Internet.
Unattended Children at Closing: Staff will contact the parent/guardian of any child left at the library upon closing. If a parent is unable to be contacted within a reasonable period of time, the librarian will contact the local sheriff’s office to pick up the child.
